Actor Tumpe Mtaya (Phwedo) Arrested in Lilongwe on Allegations of Defilement

Police in Lilongwe have detained well-known actor Tumpe Mtaya, famously recognized by his stage name Phwedo, on suspicion of defiling a 15-year-old girl. 

The arrest has sent shockwaves through the local arts and entertainment community and sparked widespread concern.

The spokesperson for the Central Region Police Headquarters, Foster Benjamin, stated that Mtaya is being investigated in connection with an alleged incident that reportedly occurred on February 18th of this year. (A report by zodiak online). 

According to law enforcement officials,  Tumpe Mtaya was taken into custody at Lilongwe Police Station following a formal complaint lodged by the parents of the teenage girl. Police have indicated that they are currently conducting a thorough investigation into the allegations.

At this time, details surrounding the alleged incident remain scarce as the investigation is in its early stages. Police have not released further information regarding the location of the alleged defilement or the specific circumstances leading to the complaint.

Tumpe Mtaya, known for his roles in various local dramas and productions, is a familiar face in Malawian entertainment. His arrest on such serious allegations has understandably generated significant public interest and discussion.

Fuel Prices Increase in Malawi Starting April 1 The Malawi Energy Regulatory Authority (MERA) has announced new fuel prices that starts today on 1 April 2026, following a review by its Energy Pricing Committee. Teen Found Dead in Suspected Suicide in Masasa Township By Maggie Msongole A 17 Year-old boy, identified as Micca Gama, was found dead in a suspected case of suicide in Masasa Township, Mzuzu, on Monday morning.  Gama’s lifeless body was discovered inside his home with a deep cut to the throat, raising concerns and prompting an ongoing police investigation.
