Malawi to Conduct Voter Verification from May 29 to June 1 Ahead of 2025 General Elections
The Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) set to begin a critical voter verification exercise from May 29 to June 1, 2025, as part of preparations for the upcoming general elections scheduled for September 16.
According to the Spokesperson for the Malawi Electoral Commission, Sangwani Mwafulirwa, the MEC has set up a USSD facility that allows citizens to verify their voter details using their mobile phones. Voters can do this by entering their voter certificate number or voter national ID number. This digital option aims to streamline the verification process and make it more accessible to a wider population.
"If individuals encounter any challenges using the USSD facility or during the verification process in general, they are encouraged and advised to visit the center where they originally registered." Mwafulirwa said.
He also highlighted that during this period, the MEC has personnel available at these centers to assist voters.
The MEC spokesperson further stressed that the voter verification exercise is a crucial undertaking that the commission has provided for. He added that the commission is accorded to law to undertake this process, which aims to address issues related to the proper entry of registered voters into the voters' register. This reiterates the commitment to ensuring a credible and transparent electoral process.
The voter verification will be conducted in three phases across the country's regions: Northern, Central, and Southern. During this period, the MEC will make the voters' register available for public inspection, enabling individuals to confirm their registration status and report any inaccuracies. This initiative is in line with the Presidential, Parliamentary, and Local Government Elections Act of 2023, which mandates such verification processes to uphold electoral transparency and credibility.

Nice work Maggie
