DPP Condemns Arrest of Jappie Mhango, Labels It Intimidation Tactic
The Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) has condemned the arrest of its Vice President for the North, Jappie Mhango, by the Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB), describing the move as politically motivated and an attempt to intimidate opposition figures ahead of the upcoming general elections.
In a statement released on Monday, the DPP questioned the timing of Mhango’s arrest, which relates to alleged misconduct during his tenure as Minister of Transport and Public Works between 2016 and 2017. The party raised concerns over why the ACB is acting on allegations that are over seven years old, just as Malawi prepares for a crucial election expected within the next 100 days.
The opposition party accused the ruling Malawi Congress Party (MCP) of using state institutions such as the ACB and Police to suppress dissent and target political rivals. According to the DPP, the arrest forms part of a broader pattern of what it described as a "manufactured witch hunt" against its members, while corruption within the current administration is allegedly overlooked.
Despite the arrest, the DPP reaffirmed its commitment to democratic principles and vowed not to be intimidated. It called on party members, supporters, and citizens to remain united and vigilant as the country heads toward the polls.
The statement was signed by the party’s Presidential Spokesperson and National Publicity Secretary, Shadric Namalomba MP.
